About this listen
What the critics say
"Mr. Burroughs remains ebulliently glib when it's useful, as befits his advertising skills....[He] remains adept at mixing comedy and calamity." (The New York Times)
"Like the alcohol he so enjoys, Burroughs' story of getting dry will go straight into your bloodstream and leave you buzzing, exhilarated, and wiped out...this memoir operates on a high level of involvement and suspense." (Kirkus Reviews)
"[A] wrenching, edifying journey...with the added benefit of being really entertaining." (The New York Times Book Reviews)
"Harrowing yet hilarious personal encounter....His performance blends self-deprecating black humor with wise-cracking confidence. His natural wit and charm keep the listener rooting for his success." (AudioFile)

Wish the ending was better
Augusten’s performance is great! I’ve read a couple of his other books as well. Good sense of humour. Good storytelling. However, I thought the ending was rushed, compared to some of the details and tangents that earlier chapters dove into.

One of the best
Augusten Burroughs is one of my favourite authors. I have read all of his books twice and now am listening to them on audio many years later. All of his books, specifically, running with scissors, dry, devil at the table, all fantastic reads

Another Hit!
Can’t get enough of this author! He’s so likeable and the helper in me wanted to help him. I love every one of his books. Hopefully there will be more in the near future. Thank you Mr. Burroughs xo

Almost as good as Running with Scissors
Narrated beautifully. I love his sarcasm and wit. Couldn’t stop listening to the first and second books.

very good recovery book
as someone who has struggled with addiction in my own life, I really appreciated listening to this book. the author provides a raw and bitterly truthful story of his journey in finding sobriety. he talks of his first time in rehab, relapse, juggling work with addiction, love, and family. it is a very personal and relatable story to hear. I highly reccomend this book, especially for this who struggle with addiction.

Authentic Narrating
I really enjoy books where the author is the narrator. This was an authentic and very real memoir. If you are a recovering alcoholic, and get triggered easily, maybe read something else instead.
