About this listen

Relic, a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child thriller that introduces FBI Special Agent Pendergast

Just days before a massive exhibition opens at the popular New York Museum of Natural History, visitors are being savagely murdered in the museum's dark hallways and secret rooms. Autopsies indicate that the killer cannot be human....

But the museum's directors plan to go ahead with a big bash to celebrate the new exhibition, in spite of the murders.

Museum researcher Margo Green must find out who - or what - is doing the killing. But can she do it in time to stop the massacre?

What the critics say

"With its close-up view of museum life and politics, plausible scientific background, sharply drawn characters and a plot line that's blissfully free of gratuitous romance, this well-crafted novel offers first-rate thrills and chills." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Wildly cool....Thrill hounds couldn't ask for a creepier environment....a thriller staged in the world's scariest building, with no room for the squeamish." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Source material shows its age.

My wife reads the Pendergast novels, so I thought I would go back and start at the start. I feel like we had a higher tolerance for schlock back in those days, because while the whole structure of the story is utterly predictable, it’s also utterly familiar. And of course anything built around slightly-fringey, slightly-pseudo science isn’t going to age well. I just didn’t find it that enjoyable, in the end.

Not their best.

I L-O-V-E this character, and it’s good to hear the beginning of the story… The performance was sub-par.

Tedious

I remember loving Preston and Child way back in the 80s and thought this would be a welcome return to the great novels I remember reading then. What I guess I didn't remember was the amount of apparently requisite tedious scientific evidence and validation required. Then there is the equally ridiculously intense police procedures that are so specific. I found myself yelling at my car to get on with it! Apart from all that, the story was good but could honestly have been told well in a much shorter and more satisfying time.

Great Book, great narrator

I have always appreciated the film. It is very possibly my favorite monster film, though some other films offer up quite stiff competition.

Anyhow, that aside....this book was a fantastic listen. I see now the criticism regarding the film adaptation opposed to the book. The film does not do the book any justice. Film adaption is usually always so........ no 🤔

Easy listen and good start to a series

Relic is a very easy listen, with characters that are easy to love and villains easy to hate (or at least you wish they'd get fired). The performance is actually not amazing, but I gave it a 5 because the entire book was thoroughly enjoyable. It's a self contained novel, but there is an obvious lead in to a future story (I believe book 2). I look forward to it, wirh my only regret being the number of performers there are in the series.

Great audiobook!

I am trying to get into audiobooks and I decided to go with a book I've already read before to start. I love this book and the narrator just made it all the better, he was engaging and every character voice was different. I am really glad I went with this choice and loved every second of it.
