Publisher's Summary

From NYT and USA Today best-selling author A.L. Jackson comes a close-proximity single-parent stand-alone romance about a woman on the run and the man who will do anything to save her....

Jud Lawson found me stranded in the rain.

Broken down on the side of the road in a deserted neighborhood with my piece-of-crap car.

I wasn’t looking for a hero, and definitely not one who looks like him. An obscenely hot mountain of a man who screams danger.

But I have little choice other than climbing onto the back of his bike.

One look at Salem Aguilar, and I’m hooked.

The girl is devastation wrapped in a black, seductive bow. A knockout. A dream.

Turns out, she needs a job, and I need the help.

Now I have a vixen strutting around my shop, and I’m the fool who’s itching to reach out and take what he can’t have.

But neither of us can ignore the burning attraction.

The fire that leads to a kiss. A kiss that has us falling into my bed. The connection that has me wanting the one thing I’d never thought I could have again.

Because monsters like me don’t deserve love.

Only Salem has a secret, too.

She’s been running for years, and her past just caught up to us....

Word Salad

This story would of been a five star, if the word salad had been dialed down. Andi Ardnt and Joe Arden are one of my favourite narrators and you could even hear them struggling. When the author was describing a scene or feelings, the over use of words was maddening. You felt like shouting “I get it” which I’m sure I did a few times. Other then getting past the over describing there is a good story here. The story had some really great twists and turns, amazing ending. Oh and Joe Arden did superbly doing the kids voices, made you fall in love with them!

Black Magic

Salem and Jud were "black f*ckin magic!|" I'm always amazed listening to A.L. Jackson's words, it's like listening to poetry the whole time. The narrators, Joe Arden and Andi Arndt were impeccable. Every time Jud said "Darlin" I swooned.

Salem has been running from her past and has one purpose, keeping her daughter safe.

Jud's past demons have been chained and locked away for years, but they are writhing to get out when Salem enters his world. He can't forget his purpose.

Their connection is instant and so palpable, but they both deny their connection as long as they can...but my oh my when they give in, it's worth the wait!

They heal each other in ways that can't be explained. But their pasts are bound to catch up with them and in a twist of fate their pasts are intertwined. Jud will do anything to keep Salem and her daughter safe, even if that means the demon comes out...and luckily Salem is their to reel it back in...because love can conquer all when the other person truly see's you for the person you are and not for the things that you've done.

Black magic 🖤

I loved Jud and Salam.
Jud is a big teddy bear. He looks big and scary but inside is soft, caring, creative and passionate.
Salam has been broken down but refuses to let it stop her. She’s a true survivor and continues to rise every time life tries to beat her down. Her trust has been broken, she’s guarded and doing her best to keep her daughter safe.
These were two characters who were both trying to outrun the darkness and demons of their pasts. Both of them struggle to trust love after being burned in their past. They are both deserving of love and someone who loves them for exactly who they are, all the good and the bad. They both have dark pasts that weigh them down and keep them guarded.
Rated lower because I felt like the book was a bit repetitive. The characters each seemed to repeat the same things quite often which was very frustrating. I enjoyed the audio narration and thought it was really well done, just repetitive.

Really wish I liked this one just as much as the first one…

2.5 or 3 ⭐️
I loved the first book, but this was one felt super repetitive. It also felt similar to the first book, the tropes were similar.

Loved the beginning of them meeting and then figuring out their feelings for each other.

Sometimes the writing kept over
emphasizing the world in my opinion and just seemed unnecessary. I was okay with Jud saying “black magic” for the first few chapters, but then it really started to annoying me. I swear it was said 20 times in each of his chapters.

I first started reading this one then switched over to the audiobook, and I swear children’s dialogues should not be read by an adult trying to do a child voice. It just sounds so unrealistic and the sentences and words the kids would say just threw me off.

wordy

good storyline if you can get past the overly described descriptions. A few time's I almost stopped reading. But once I start a book I like to finish it. The narration was good. Just got really tired of the word salad. This book I'll return. I wouldn't be able to re-listen to it
