As a reader diving into "Steel Princess," the second installment of the Royal Elite series by Rina Kent, I found myself once again captivated by the intricate web of intrigue and passion woven by the author. This marks my second foray into Kent's world, having been drawn in by the tantalizing promises of a dark romance, discovered through the vast expanse of social media, likely a serendipitous recommendation from a Facebook group.
Much like its predecessor, this book had me oscillating between love and frustration, each page turn an emotional rollercoaster. Kent's storytelling prowess is evident as the narrative flows seamlessly, pulling me deeper into the tumultuous lives of Elsa and Aiden. Yet, amidst the gripping plot twists and turns, there remains an enigmatic veil shrouding the characters and their motivations, leaving me simultaneously craving more answers and dreading the impending cliffhanger.
The chemistry between Elsa and Aiden crackles with intensity, their tumultuous relationship serving as the fiery centerpiece of this dark high school bully romance. Kent doesn't shy away from exploring the darker, more taboo aspects of their connection, warning readers of the mature and dubious situations they'll encounter within these pages.
The synopsis teases a battle of wills between the princess and the king, promising a war of epic proportions. True to its word, "Steel Princess" delivers on the tension and conflict, with each character adhering to their own set of rules in this dangerous game of power and desire.

What the actual fuck. Sorry I’m writing this review right after finishing the book. I am in shock…… This book was the perfect inbetween of a trilogy. It gave momentum for the final book, answered the necessary questions the first book left unanswered. It did all this while flipping everything upside down. The characters themselves went through a lot this book, more Elsa in the current times. But Aiden’s hard past finally reveals itself and damn it’s heavy. These two are so twisted in their own stories and together is unimaginable. I could have guessed some of the twists, but I allowed myself to be surprised by the big moments. I am literally starting the next one as soon as this review is over!

The majority of the story is a rinse and repeat of repetitive scenes. Aiden uses Silver to make Elsa jealous, Elsa uses Knox to make Aiden jealous, Aiden’s left eye twitches and he engages in a dub-con possessive fit over Elsa, the plot makes a baby step forwards but then Elsa uses some truly impressive mental gymnastics to willfully keep herself in the dark, etc, etc.
Elsa has to be one of the most willfully ignorant heroines I have ever read about. It’s like she is allergic to asking relevant questions or following up on leads. A character will say something that finally inches the glacially moving plot forward, and instead of sensibly zeroing in on it and demanding answers, she will completely gloss over it in order to drag out the mystery.
Ex: Aiden will say something to her like she is “ruining everything” and instead of her asking him what it is that she is ruining, she just gets dickmatized. He says he missed her and instead of her making the connection that he could only have missed her if he’d known her previously, it goes in one ear and out the other, and she once again falls into bed with him.
The steamy scenes were pretty good but even they got kinda annoying because it really started to feel like they were being used as roadblocks to prevent any real plot progression.
I had to snort laugh out loud when Aiden had the thought late in the book that Elsa ‘was smart enough to put two and two together’ because she was the queen of denial and truly had to be bashed over the head with any truths.
Aiden is lucky he is with Elsa and not me, because I probably would have been driven to real violence against him if he kept skirting the truth and talking in cryptic circles to me like that all the dang time.
The story also approaches mental health with the same sensitivity that it approaches consent, by which I mean none. Zero sensitivity.
I sound like I hated the story, but I listened to the whole thing and will be listening to book 3, so there was stuff I enjoyed, but boy did I need to rant about what frustrated me.
Things I liked:
The friendship between the four horsemen. Their banter was genuinely fun.
Aiden being wildly over the top jealous and possessive (I am trash for a JP hero)
The moments when Aiden would actually soften with Elsa and show caring
The voice acting was great and definitely elevated the material
Especially Shane East’s voice as Aiden 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Overall an entertaining story if you leave logic at the door and don’t mind a very very slow burn plot.
