Publisher's Summary

In this gripping thriller, an ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life.

She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.

Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

When her former handler offers her a way out, she realizes it's her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers. To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous.

Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.

In this tautly plotted novel, Meyer creates a fierce and fascinating new heroine with a very specialized skill set. And she shows once again why she's one of the world's best-selling authors.

What the critics say

"Even with Archer's outstanding portrayal of Alex, secondary characters Kevin and Val still steal all their scenes, thanks to Archer's memorable voices. Pack your go bag and enter Meyer's breathless romantic suspense." ( AudioFile)

absolutely wonderful

I picked up this book at a friend's house and thought it sounded very good. And I was not disappointed I was hooked from the beginning.

A Great Listen For Long Drives!

I absolutely love Ellen Archer - her narrating never fails to engage me in the story; I can't recommend her enough! As for the actual novel - while a little predictable, the story is none-the-less interesting, and the characterization of the three main characters is well thought out! It's also an interesting take on the whole "wrongly accused" trope - while the main character IS targeted and has to fight for her freedom, she's done her fair share of questionable things. Stephanie Meyer manages to portray a complex character and her thought processes very well. I'd definitely recommend if, like me, you have a long daily commute and need something to keep you from dying of boredom.

Absolutely impressive!

I didn't know what to expect after reading the Twilight trilogy at my daughter's urging, and then realizing that this was the same author. that of course was years ago...
I am thoroughly impressed.
the chemist is fast-paced and has twists and chuckles with very realistic reactions from strong characters.
i can't wait to buy it for my daughter and make us even...

Hard to get into, but when I did, I couldn't stop!

I found the reader pretty boring at first. Also found the beginning of the book hard to get into. Probably around chapter 11 or so it got better and so did the reader.

Suspense et histoire au top

L’intrigue bien développée, l’aventure de l’héroïne nous tiens en haleine tout au long de l’histoire!

Fun read, good narration, unnecessarily sappy

I enjoyed this read, but didn't love it. I was initially drawn into the story for its intrigue and for the main character with her rational, specialized, hardened mindset. It felt quite out of place when the thing turned into an intense, kind of sappy romance halfway through. While I can appreciate that there was romance, the level seemed a bit much for the serious tone established in the first half of the book.

In general, I think the second half of the book is a lot weaker than the first. Once the mystery is mostly solved, the momentum dies out a bit for me.

I did quite appreciate the narrator, I thought her take on the protagonist added a lot and her voice suited the content.

Le livre en soit est excellent, mais l’audiobook est vraiment génial! La natation est parfaite et je ne me lace pas de l’écouter.
