About this listen
We are all vulnerable to addiction. Whether it's a compulsion to constantly check social media, binge eating, smoking, excessive drinking, or any other behaviors, we may find ourselves uncontrollably repeating. Why are bad habits so hard to overcome? Is there a key to conquering the cravings we know are unhealthy for us?
This book provides groundbreaking answers to the most important questions about addiction. Dr. Judson Brewer, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has studied the science of addictions for 20 years, reveals how we can tap into the very processes that encourage addictive behaviors in order to step out of them. He describes the mechanisms of habit and addiction formation, then explains how the practice of mindfulness can interrupt these habits.
Weaving together patient stories, his own experience with mindfulness practice, and current scientific findings from his own lab and others, Dr. Brewer offers a path for moving beyond our cravings, reducing stress, and ultimately living a fuller life.

More budhism than anything else in this.
Well, if you are into budhism/world religion this should be right up your alley. I would say that comprises about 65% of the book. If you (like me) are OTHER than into world religion, you will find it quite the grind IMO. I am VERY much into meditation, and also am ok with people putting their faith/beLIEfs into their own books. Yet for me a balance, or even better a MINIMUM of that CAN go a long way...I found this book to be super grindy to get through because of that, and even just skipped to the next chapter when they basically started reading verbatim from all their fans of the religion / religious texts. It WAS free for me, and DOES provide SOME good insights about the mechanics of addiction, most of which I already knew so looked at those like a reminder. So taking that into account I still rated it higher than I would of if I had bought it!

Was missing something
I loved the idea of this book and really wanted to like it but found myself asking: « ok but now what? »
It went through ALOT of psychology theory but lacked concrete tools. I am not addicted to cigarettes, alcohol or drugs but rather have addictive cravings and was hoping to get some insight.
My conclusion (I think) was that mindfulness and meditation are the answers but he only briefly goes through this. Hi puts a lot of various information out there but does not pull it together at the end. I feel like I was not given concrete advice.
Like when you feel like binge eating, do this.

Great content, robotic narration
Dr. Brewer is a brilliant researcher, unifying eastern wisdom with western science and I enjoy his talks and participation in different seminars. In spite of this admiration I was not able to listen to this book due to the robotic and uninteresting narration. Best to buy a hard copy, well worth it.

Too much fluff
There is just too much filler content in here, listening to the book becomes tedious, and as a result you eventually lose focus of the key points the book is based on. I can just imagine in my head an editor telling Judson - "We need more pages!! Expand on your relationship with your girlfriend in college- people love personal connection!". Honestly, 1 chapter would be enough for you to understand the core principles and provide a guide for how to improve your ability to deal with cravings. Instead, we get a heavily padded book that even includes an entire chapter devoted to a sales pitch about their iphone apps and online service. Which is a shame! Because I believe the core ideas in this book would help many people.
