About this listen

In the beginning, there was darkness.

Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave. But fate had something else in mind.

Till darkness dies.

From the barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a fairy who began with nothing, became the Emperor of Evening Stars.

This is a novella told from Desmond Flynn’s perspective.

The night kings POV, so good

I was sad at first that this book didn’t take place right after the second book since it ended on a cliffhanger and all those female warriors woke up I their glass coffins.

But this was book was something I didn’t realize I really wanted until I went through it.

This book was our night fae kings POV and origin story and it just made me love him even more!

We got to know his mother and everything she did to keep them safe, we got to meet his father too unfortunately.

Then the 7 years apart how he tried every day to get back to her, and watching her with other men which broke his heart.

We got his POV right up until the end of book 2 so they both left on that epic cliffhanger

Gives me the Creeps

Listen. The first book took some getting used to because the narrator had too much sultry in her voice for what was happening and it grated on me. But I powered through and the story line got me. Second book? Awesome! kept me hooked.

This book?

From Des' perspective. He's a creep. For some reason it doesn't bother me when I read books about a hopeless teenager (usually 18) falling in love with a hundreds year old Fae. But he meets her when she's 15. And hearing his perspective of his internal battles about how attractive he finds her and how she tempts him and how he's losing his control on being noble. Then the scene with the high-school dance... I'm sure the author wasn't trying to present it that way but immediately I got the ick. Creepy old man who finds a 15 or 16 year old girl so irresistible... Listening to his inner termoil about it. I just couldn't get through it. It gave me yucky feelings like when "Uncle John" told me I was too pretty for my age when I was 8. And it STILL never explained what he was doing for the weeks and weeks she was held captive.... Can't do it. DNF

Short but Satisfying

Lived to get the backstory and see things from Des' side of things. Exciting and fun.

Ideal bat boyfriend.

This perspective was very enjoyable. It was nice to know the “why” of somethings in a very organic way - and since we find out more about his secretive nature in the last book - 2.5 helps in a way natural conversation was unable to.

Perfect from Desmond's point of view

This was a great book and a necessary addition to the story. I fell in love with Desmond, he is the perfect mix of good and evil, right and wrong. I am happy I decided to listen to it. I love the narrator and wish that the whole series was read by dual narration. This is the first time I have listened to this author and she is worth the credit to lisen. I hope that there is more Des and Cally in the future. It would be nice even if they make a cameo in an up coming series. Someone comes to talk to them about something...
Great book, great narration.

The narrator made it bearable.

This book is lucky that the narrator is so smooth voiced that you’d listen to him read a laundry list.

would have happily skipped it

my impression of Des from the first two books was this cocky, mischievous, confident asshole going around making deals. my opinion had been that he didn't know why he was so drawn to Callie and I had actually enjoyed that concept. this book, from his pov, made him unpleasantly angsty and whiny and just so lovelorn it was kind of painful. I listened to it because I didn't want to miss essential backstory but it has all been basically revealed in the first two books.
really enjoy the books from Callie's pov though. they have the humour that was missing from this one.
