Publisher's Summary

The second novel in the thrilling and epic new fantasy series from the international best-selling author of Red Sister and Prince of Thorns.

On the planet Abeth there is only the ice. And the Black Rock.

For generations the priests of the Black Rock have reached out from their mountain to steer the fate of the ice tribes. With their Hidden God, their magic and their iron, the priests’ rule has never been questioned. But when ice triber Yaz challenged their authority, she was torn away from the only life she had ever known, and forced to find a new path for herself.

Yaz has lost her friends and found her enemies. She has a mountain to climb, and even if she can break the Hidden God’s power, her dream of a green world lies impossibly far to the south, across a vast emptiness of ice. Before the journey can even start, she has to find out what happened to the ones she loves and save those that can be saved.

Abeth holds its secrets close, but the stars shine brighter for Yaz and she means to unlock the truth.

Wicked performance!

Incredible diversity of character voices really bring this fantastic book to life!! The whole trilogy is narrated by the same person which is great!

Mostly awesome

Really loved this book, the story is awesome and such a great follow up to its prequel and ties to the red sister series. That narrator does a really great job of the characters voices but the narration in between dialog kind of sounds like she's reading a news report, always ending her sentences with the same intonation that kind of annoyed me. But still very glad to have listened and would do so again.

Super Slow Start, Strong Ending

I felt that the beginning of this novel was very similar to the beginning of The Girl and the Stars. Stop me if this sounds familiar. Yaz is in a new place, on her own, looking for friends while trying to find her way out. I will say the back half of the story made up for much of the first half, which is why I rated the story three stars.

If you’re familiar with Greek mythology, you’ll notice lots of references to it here.

I’m still a big fan of Helen Duff, but as the story unfolded I realized she was mispronouncing one of the names of the characters. This realization was based on the origin of the character’s name. In addition, when she says “Theus” I still often hear “fierce.” I wish she had taken more time to get character names right.

Not impressed.

It was such a long uneventful story that I didn't even finish. Was not impressed from the sisters series.
