The Blair Witch Project meets Midsommar in this brilliantly disturbing thriller from Camilla Sten, an electrifying new voice in suspense.
Documentary filmmaker Alice Lindstedt has been obsessed with the vanishing residents of the old mining town, dubbed “The Lost Village”, since she was a little girl. In 1959, her grandmother’s entire family disappeared in this mysterious tragedy, and ever since, the unanswered questions surrounding the only two people who were left - a woman stoned to death in the town center and an abandoned newborn - have plagued her. She’s gathered a small crew of friends in the remote village to make a film about what really happened.
But there will be no turning back.
Not long after they’ve set up camp, mysterious things begin to happen. Equipment is destroyed. People go missing. As doubt breeds fear and their very minds begin to crack, one thing becomes startlingly clear to Alice:
They are not alone.
They’re looking for the truth....
But what if it finds them first?
Come find out.

Story
A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: Something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waiting.... Now a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Otherwise, they’ll end up like the monsters’ other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

Story
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

Story
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Story
West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter, Gertie. Now, in present day, 19-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara's farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister, Fawn. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that suddenly proves perilous when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished without a trace. Searching for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary....

Story
Eleanor lives with prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize a familiar person's face. It causes stress. Acute anxiety. It can make you question what you think you know. When Eleanor walked in on the scene of her capriciously cruel grandmother, Vivianne’s, murder, she came face to face with the killer—a maddening expression that means nothing to someone like her. With each passing day, the horror of having come so close to a murderer—and not knowing if they’d be back—overtakes both her dreams and her waking moments, thwarting her perception of reality.

Story
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Loved it.
I will be seeking out more titles from this and other Scandinavian authors.
Angela Dawe is always a brilliant reader. Her range of voices for each character, clear speech, and emotion that follows the story perfectly enhance anything that she reads.
Camilla Sten has given us a wonderful and thrilling mystery to immerse ourselves into. She paints a picture with words, making each scene a vivid image in our minds. It was easy to imagine myself in this small Scandinavian village amongst the colorful little houses feeling the same emotions as the characters. I wish I could understand Sweedish so I could listen to / read more of her work.

Interesting storyline, more of a thriller
I came with a preference for horror and the supernatural, so was slightly disappointed with the purchase. This was most certainly a thriller mystery, but not a horror novel. The storyline was interesting and I could picture the settings in my mind's eye. Some of the hidden twists were easy to discern early on. Overall, it was worth a one time read.

If you love a good mystery check this book out!
I love a good mystery and a good scary story which this book definitely delivered. The author does a great job slowly revealing what happened in the past with short flashbacks that are like a puzzle you slowly put together. The shocks and suprises are completely unexpected and the story takes you on a creepy and disturbing ride. Loved it.

Meh.
I enjoyed the ambience of the setting, the cult back story, and the continuous switching from now to then. The ending was kind of a surprise. Is this a supernatural mystery? You’re left to decide that for yourself. In the end I found the story to be missing excitement. Maybe it’s because I found the main character in the “now” to be incredibly annoying. In fact, all the intentional heartfelt or heartbreaking moments in the “now” were so contrived, I was just left rolling my eyes. It didn’t come off as real emotion. The narration likely exasperated that, although it wasn’t as much of an issue during the “then” portions of the novel which were much more interesting. I enjoyed the premise, but in the end it fell flat for me. Wouldn’t recommend it to a friend.

major disappointment
I had been looking forward to this for a while, after first seeing it in the "upcoming" section. But then it was actually terrible. If you can suspend your disbelief about pretty much every element of the plot, there's a chance you might enjoy it in a B horror movie way, but... no.
I was so disappointed.
