  • Your Food May Be Aging You

Your Food May Be Aging You

    Vidcast: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DE3FugURhQi/

Ultra-processed foods, UPFs, yes those sugary drinks, colorful cereals, cookies, instant noodles, and cakes, pound on your body’s cells to the extent that it makes your body older than your actual chronologic age. Nutritionists from Australia’s Monash University studied 16,055 subjects 20 to 79 years of age. Tabulating their biological age markers and diet, they found that every 10% increase in ultra processed food drove a 2 month increase in cellular aging.

Those eating the most UPFs had bodies a year older than their chronological ages.

You won’t wonder why when you read the long list of unnatural ingredients in these products. The emulsifiers, hydrogenated oils, and unmentionable preservatives drown out any real nutrients that manage to find their way into the packaging.

Aging isn’t the only negative triggered by ultraprocessed foods. The Harvard Nurses Health and Health Professionals Studies, analyzing some 3.6 million subjects, showed that high intake of ultra processed foods boosted your risk of coronary heart disease, often a heart attack, by 16%.

Ultra-processed foods play a huge role in our current obesity epidemic. They also deposit fat where you least want it. UC-San Francisco radiologists now report an MR imaging study that links these foods to increased fat deposition in thigh muscles. Ugly indeed.

These ultra-processed goodies are tasty and tantalizing. If you want to age more gracefully and avoid life-threatening illness, though, you should only ingest them as treats and, even then, once in a blue moon.

  • Grapefruit Interacts With Popular Medications
    Jan 15 2025

    Vidcast: https://www.instagram.com/drhowardsmithreports/reel/DE3EziwuRqe/

Grapefruit interacts with various enzymes and transporters in the body. When it does, it tends to make some prescription medications either less or more effective. An excellent article on health.com lists all of the prescription drugs that grapefruit effects. Let’s run through them so you’re in the know.

    • Statins: Used to lower cholesterol; grapefruit can elevate their levels and increases a risk of muscle damage.

    • Calcium Channel Blockers: high blood pressure medications; grapefruit may enhance their effects and may crash your blood pressure.

    • Estrogen-containing Medications: Most common are birth control pills; grapefruit raises estrogen levels with a greater risk of side effects.

    • Immunosuppressants: Taken to prevent transplanted organ rejection; grapefruit increases drug levels with a risk of kidney toxicity.

    • Benzodiazepines: Anti-anxiety drugs; grapefruit boosts their sedative effects producing excess drowsiness.

    • Corticosteroids: Anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive medication; grapefruit elevates steroid levels which can trigger or worsen diabetes.

    • Anti-Arrhythmics: given to suppress irregular heart rhythms; grapefruit can enhance the effect and precipitate dangerous heart rhythms.

    • Diabetes Medications: prescribed for type 2 diabetes; grapefruit can raise drug levels with more side effects including dangerous depression of blood sugar levels.

    • Antihistamines: taken for allergies; grapefruit can reduce the effectiveness of certain antihistamines, particularly the non-sedating ones.

    • Blood Thinners: including clopidogrel; grapefruit can increase bleeding risk by elevating drug levels.

    • Cancer Medications: Grapefruit increases drug levels increasing toxicity.

    • Antibiotics: Grapefruit elevates drug levels and side effects.

    • Opioids: Grapefruit increases drug levels leading to respiratory suppression.

    • Erectile Dysfunction Drugs: Grapefruit increases levels with dangerous blood pressure suppression.

A good tip is always to check for interactions between the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take as well as between them and foods you consume. Your medical team including your pharmacist can do this for you. You can easily do this yourself on the website WebMD

  • EPA Bans Two Common Solvents
    Jan 15 2025

    Vidcast: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DE3ESW9t2ue/

The US Environmental Protection Agency now bans trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (Perc). TCE damages the immune as well as the nervous system and has been implicated in liver and kidney cancers as well as non-hodgekins lymphoma. Perc is associated with liver, kidney, brain, and testicular cancers.

TCE is a common ingredient in carpet cleaners, spot removers, glues and adhesives, paint removers and strippers, auto brake cleaners and engine degreasers. Perc is found in dry cleaning chemicals, spot and stain removers, degreasers, aerosol shoe polishes and lubricants, engine degreasers and brake cleaners, and paint/varnish removers.

Check your shelves at home and work for these products and check the ingredient lists. If you must work around these chemicals, do so with adequate ventilation and high filtration masks.
