Driving home from a dinner party in the village of Sumpton Harcourt, Rory and Molly Harris, the new vicar and his wife, strain to see the road ahead - and then suddenly brake, screeching to a halt. Après s'être compromise avec les suffragettes, au grand désespoir de ses parents, la jeune fille de bonne famille fait une entrée désastreuse dans la haute société londonienne... Ce qui ne dissuade pas un Sir aux allures distinguées de lui faire les yeux doux. Très louche, selon le père de Lady Rose, qui charge le capitaine Harry Cathcart, aristocrate désargenté, d'en savoir plus sur le prétendant.

John Heppel, écrivain aussi célèbre que prétentieux, est récemment arrivé à Lochdubh. Entre deux livres, il anime des ateliers d’écriture, se délectant d’anéantir les ambitions littéraires de ses élèves. Quand on retrouve son corps sans vie, la langue enduite d’encre, après un empoisonnement à la naphtaline, Hamish s’interroge : certes, Heppel était détestable et détesté, mais qui aurait eu intérêt à le tuer ? L’affaire attire les médias, entraînant dans leur sillage l’inspectrice en chef Heather Meikle, une mangeuse d’hommes qui a un faible pour les policiers célibataires...

Furieuse, Crystal French se venge en révélant les secrets du village de Lochdubh dans une de ses émissions au titre éloquent : Derrière les rideaux de dentelles. Mais en déterrant de vieux scandales, la reine de l'audimat devient l'ennemie public numéro un.
