Newlyweds Sam Statler and Annie Potter are head over heels, and excited to say good-bye to New York city and start a life together in Sam's sleepy hometown upstate. Or, it turns out, a life where Annie spends most of her time alone while Sam, her therapist husband, works long hours in his downstairs office, tending to the egos of his (mostly female) clientele. Little does Sam know that through a vent in his ceiling, every word of his sessions can be heard from the room upstairs.

They call themselves the May Mothers - a collection of new moms who gave birth in the same month. Twice a week, with strollers in tow, they get together in Prospect Park, seeking refuge from the isolation of new motherhood. When the group’s members agree to meet for drinks at a hip local bar, they have in mind a casual evening of fun, a brief break from their daily routine. But on this sultry Fourth of July night during the hottest summer in Brooklyn’s history, something goes terrifyingly wrong: one of the babies is taken from his crib.

Sie nennen sich die "May Mothers": eine New Yorker Gruppe von frischgebackenen Müttern, deren Babys im selben Monat geboren wurden. Schon in der Schwangerschaft hielten sie über ein Online-Forum Kontakt, nun treffen sie sich wöchentlich im Park, um ihre Freuden und Nöte zu teilen. Als sie eines Abends gemeinsam ausgehen, geschieht etwas Furchtbares: Der kleine Midas wird trotz Babysitter aus seinem Kinderbett entführt. Die Polizei scheint inkompetent. Und während der nun folgenden, quälenden Suche muss sich jede der Frauen lang gehüteten Geheimnissen und unbequemen Wahrheiten stellen.
