About this listen
A smart, sexy guide to embracing the repressed, tabooed, and often unwanted aspects of ourselves so we can discover our inner power and finally live the life we deserve.
“We always get exactly what we want; but often, though we may not be aware of it, what we most want is dark - very dark.”
Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other”, the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.
In Existential Kink, Carolyn Elliot, PhD, offers a truth-telling guide for bringing our shadow into the light. Inviting us to make conscious the unconscious, Elliot asks us to own the subconscious pleasure we get from the stuck, painful patterns of our existence.
Existential Kink provides practical advice and meditations so we truly see our shadow side’s “guilty pleasures”, love and accept them, and integrate them into our whole being. By doing so, Elliot shows, we bring to life the raw, hot, glorious power we all have to get what we really want in our lives.

As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem." Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point we can truly love what is, just as it is.

This was a very insightful and powerful book
What a profound message and method, unfortunately the content is a bit sensationalized and repetitive to make the book more appealing to the masses. I can tell the author really knows her stuff, if you can get past the surface the underlying method and messages are profound!

Highlights an important understanding of Law of Attraction
I love any author that dives into sharing their truths about the shadow because it is in the shadow that we find our greatest freedom from the effects of living in this world.
Carolyn offers a really compelling perspective with her work of existential kink. Humans naturally move away from pain (hence the shadow exists) and move toward pleasure. So if you experience disappointing circumstances in your life at any level, especially as a pattern, I would suggest it is worth it to explore how shadow aspects of yourself (hidden, even from yourself) might be deriving pleasure from these circumstances. Her methods work for me and I gain incredible insights. Once something comes into your awareness you can free yourself from it by choosing consciously. Now THAT is powerful!
If you have not done the work of emotional regulation and/or navigate deep depression/despair because you have experienced big T traumas in this life - feeling safe, secure, and supported in your life would be a first step. I have learned in my own experience that once you perceive safety in your life, you become open to expansive healing and evolution. This work will have a place for you then. If you do not feel ready for that yet, there’s no shame in that. I hold the space for you that if you want a new experience in life, you WILL find what you need and one day make your way to these teachings, whether through Carolyn’s book or another.
For those of you curious about pleasure in our shadow (unconscious) self, I highly recommend listening to this entire book including the Q&A at the end, putting this into practice in your life, and experiencing for yourself the transformations.
The shadow is the missing piece in the mainstream teachings of the Law of Attraction, I’ve always believed this and I loved how Carolyn makes mention of this throughout her book. Remember the agenda of those in power is not to empower you. Empower yourself, get curious about your incredible human nature.

Mind bender
I thought the book had some really interesting concepts, it does a good job reviewing basic understandings of psychology while specifically talking about the relationship with the subconscious. I found you had to make the activities your own, the instructions were more of building blocks but I'd recommend the book, makes you look at your own thought patterns differently.

Amazing in content and delivery!
This book is quickly being added to my most gifted list. And while I usually prefer to read the audio version was so well delivered that I actually very much enjoyed the audio version and still caught all the gold and was able to implement the practices.
Which leads me to another point, this book is great because it's balanced in theory and practice. Not only do you deeply understand the why by the end of it, but you have concrete practices on applying the how.
I've been implementing the exercises and meditations given and even in the last 3 days am already noticing major shifts.
Highly recommend!
