Publisher's Summary

He saw what you did.

He knows who you are....

From the New York Times best-selling author of Pieces of Her and The Silent Wife, an electrifying stand-alone thriller.

An ordinary life...

Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be.

...hides a devastating past...

But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

...but now the past is catching up...

Then a case lands on her desk - defending a wealthy man accused of rape. It’s the highest profile case she’s ever been given - a case that could transform her career, if she wins. But when she meets the accused, she realizes that it’s no coincidence that he’s chosen her as his attorney. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he knows what happened 20 years ago and why Leigh has spent two decades running.

...and time is running out.

If she can’t get him acquitted, she’ll lose much more than the case. The only person who can help her is her estranged younger sister Callie, the last person Leigh would ever want to ask for help. But suddenly she has no choice....

Entertaining

As always, I enjoy Karin Slaughter’s books and Kathleen Early’s narration.

As with several other books I have listened to by this author, there is one or more section of the book that is repeated. Generally, 1-3 paragraphs. I have found this in most of Karin’s books so I would say whomever is editing needs to pay closer attention. No, it is not that I have stopped listening and backtracked a bit.

The only other thing I want to point out that was a huge bone of contention for me was the pronunciation of the name Calliope. It is not Calli Ope as Kathleen pronounced it throughout the reading, but Cal Eye O Pee.

Listen to it over two days

I have always been A big fan of Karen slaughter.
I enjoyed the Will Trent books & the Grant County.
And I’ve always wanted her to make more of those Series. I have enjoyed the book sense, but this one was the one that makes me want to relisten two her series from the beginning. 🤞🏼 someone makes a movie out of her books because they’re so good, and I would love to see how it translate.

A good read

As I read parts of this book, I wondered if it had a trigger warning. It entailed some pretty violent and disturbing images that I found difficult to hear at certain points. The author does a wonderful job however, in humanizing the characters. Narration was excellent in that it was very clear which characters were speaking and the voices were not over- performed.

Excellent story!

Karin Slaughter never disappoints! I absolutely love her development of characters. And the moments of added humour, specifically with Kali’s cat! I highly recommend this book!

One of the best novels ive ever read!

This book was one of the most wonderful books ive ever read. The writing made me feel as though i was there in many moments experiencing it first hand! The characters were so well developed and you cannot help but truly feel connected to them! By the end i was brought to tears and have already told multiple people they MUST read this book! 10/10 Karen Slaughter did a magnificent job with this and i look forward to reading many more of her works!

Do NOT Listen to Bad Reviews

I was initially put off by the few bad reviews of this book - but they're crap. People *only* don't like it because the novel recognizes that COVID-19 is happening. It is done well, too, and the story itself is great, and the character development exceptional. The irony that people are upset that a novel that documents molestation, rape, and violence against women mentions a global pandemic is laughable. The author's note about the backdrop is also thoughtful. Also I really appreciated the representation of addiction in the book, the needle and vein talk made me a bit squirmish but it was a far more genuine, compassionate, and realistic portrayal than you usually see. My favourite Slaughter book, tied with Pretty Girls.
