About this listen
Audie Award, Humor, 2016
In Furiously Happy, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea.
But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.
As Jenny says:
"Some people might think that being 'furiously happy' is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he's never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos.
"Most of my favorite people are dangerously f--ked-up but you'd never guess because we've learned to bare it so honestly that it becomes the new normal. Like John Hughes wrote in The Breakfast Club, 'We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.' Except go back and cross out the word 'hiding.'"
Furiously Happy is about "taking those moments when things are fine and making them amazing, because those moments are what make us who we are, and they're the same moments we take into battle with us when our brains declare war on our very existence. It's the difference between 'surviving life' and 'living life'. It's the difference between 'taking a shower' and 'teaching your monkey butler how to shampoo your hair'. It's the difference between being 'sane' and being 'furiously happy.'"
Lawson is beloved around the world for her inimitable humor and honesty, and in Furiously Happy, she is at her snort-inducing funniest. This is a book about embracing everything that makes us who we are - the beautiful and the flawed - and then using it to find joy in fantastic and outrageous ways. Because as Jenny's mom says, "Maybe 'crazy' isn't so bad after all." Sometimes crazy is just right.
The audiobook contains a bonus chapter only available to listeners.

Story
The holly-jolly holidays aren’t for everyone, least of all when you look back on that one Christmas when there were two definitely haunted dolls waiting for you and your sister under the tree. You have to assume that’s where it all started. And so it was for Jenny Lawson. Now, she lives in the land of eternal Halloween, as evidenced by her interior decor and general state of darkness. (Although, if you ask her, her taxidermy zoo is less dark, more delightful. But not everyone has taste, so what are you going to do?)

Story
Joe De Sena has spent his life running toward challenge and discomfort. Why? Because how we react to challenging situations defines us and our families. The only tools we have as humans to survive the many peaks and valleys of a full life are preparedness, health, leadership, and most importantly, resilience. Why do so many parents struggle to finish things we start, delay gratification, and protect our health - and why do our kids continue to struggle in every facet of life? Because we haven’t showed them a path to resilience, and we haven’t fought for it ourselves.

Funny and relatable
I laughed out loud many times and probably got some looks but, I wouldn't know because I was busy laughing. I found this book very relatable and I'm aware that may not be a good thing. I think my husband will be annoyed with this review because this account is under his name and not mine so now he seems like the crazy person. Sorry!

One of my favourites
I love this book. I have the original hardcover but also got the audiobook because when I’m having a tough day nothing makes me laugh or feel more uplifted than this book. Highly recommend. Side note: it is particularly applicable to those with anxiety and/or depression and those that love them.

The perfect mix of light and dark
This book is both entertaining and educational. Whether you are someone who also suffers from mental illness or know a loved one who does, you will have a new appreciation that a life without mental illnesses may be simpler but it doesn’t always mean better.

Can everyone identify the way I can?
I had no expectations from this book. For some reason I had even been putting off purchasing it. I laughed out loud multiple times, but it went deeper than that. Hearing someone speak your thoughts and lived experience is always amusing. Maybe we really aren't alone. Loved all of it.
