About this listen

In addition to strength, steel, and courage, a hero discovers he's in need of a friend, in the first installment of a daring and dangerous fantasy adventure.

When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere.

Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway. Naturally, Daniel is classified as a "hero," while Orrin is—also naturally—relegated to the fantasy equivalent of "bleh." Nothing new there.

But in this realm populated with lethal foes both inhuman and inescapable, sticking together matters more than ever, and soon Daniel and Orrin will discover more about themselves—and each other—than either one thought possible. In fact, Orrin just might find the confidence and strength to become something other than your average sidekick . . .

The first volume of the hit LitRPG fantasy series—with more than 600,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Fairly predictable but entertaining non the less

Not to shabby for the litrpg/isekai genre which tends to be filled with tropes, and overdone cliches. It follows a predictable format but tries to take its own unique spin on it, though it takes a long time to build up momentum to capture and maintain the reader/listeners interest. I felt I wasn't really invested until the last quart of the book to give you an idea to the pacing. Having said that it still kept me entertained enough to warrant pre-ordering the next book, but I'm easy enough to please, so it may not be for everyone. 3.9/5 stars.

Realistic protagonists and world… a pleasant surprise!

This was a very well-written, story-rich isekai story, more realistic than many in the same genre! The characters are grounded in their respective realities and perspectives, with plenty of room for development, and the writing style is immersive, with a biased narrator.

My only complaint is that the performer read all class and skill titles in a loud, robotic voice. Like, in the middle of a character speaking, certain words are replaced with loud, monotone “system” voice, which was a little grating at first.

Overall I enjoyed the whole way through and can’t wait for book 2.

it was good, but..

I liked the book, I will pick up the next one too but the names kept bringing me out of it. like they had to change the names in post and it was a jarring experience to listen to. because the volume and everything would change on every class or spell name.

Bromance

Two best friends, brothers. Fighting to survive in a new reality. Not knowing whom to trust.

Great book. Hoping for a long series with lots of characters intertwined in an epic story!

An interesting twist on the LitRPG genre

I enjoy LitRPG, but sometimes it feels like the genre is stuck in a rut.

Enter: I'm Not The Hero.

The book shows us the perspective of the character who WASN'T chosen to be the hero...you know, the OTHER one. The hero's best friend and sidekick, who isn't all powerful and isn't always right. And while some books would take this idea and run with it by turning the hero into an anti-hero, this one doesn't. The hero is a good person, and so is our main character.

The worldbuilding is solid enough, and the voice acting is well done. There's some drama, some strategizing that the reader can follow, and some mistakes made that readers can wince at. And there's some captivating hints that our main character might just be the main character by the end of the series - even if that's not true in book one.

I'm willing to give this series a ride. It's better than most, and I like where it's going.

Loved the story except for

Ok, this was a really good book overall, and I’m tentatively going to get book 2 with the hopes that a major issue stops being such a problem in the next one, namely being if every OP ability that Orrin possesses leaves him permanently crippled and unable to properly utilize them in any sort of regularity then it detracts from the fun of the story significantly. If the drop in stats was temporary instead of permanent it would be much better. And his Cycling shouldn’t be having worse effects from using it for a single day then using it for as long as he did at the start. Narration was top tier as always from Nick and I hope book 2 fixes some of the issues with Orrins abilities that book 1 had.

Definitely scratched the itch

With so many series on the go and having to wait what feels like months for some of these series to come out. I landed on this series and have absolutely no regrets. Will purchase book 2 when it comes out.

Only dislike: whenever the narrator says the word hero. It’s always emphasized. I get it for the first chapter or two but it definitely got annoying later in the story.

circles

I really liked the story for the most part, but I got really annoyed by the main character complaining, and how he is supposed to be smart but makes the same mistake every fight... then complains about it. Outside of those issues it's pretty good.
