Ben can't see why his mother dislikes his new girlfriend. And Amber doesn't want Judi anywhere near her new family. Amber just wants Ben and the children.

It wasn't too bad although a bit longer than necessary. However based in the positive reviews I read, there were a couple of crazy twists at the end, so I got my hopes up. Well I was disappointed. Totally guessed a couple and the ones I didn't, were impossible to guess as they were out of left field and not in a good way. It was just a bit too ridiculous for me. I usually do like this author, but not too happy with this one.

A bit long and the ending was disappointing

I think the reviews is what ruined this book for me. No review I read gave away the end, but knowing about a twist made me look for it and I figured it out early on in the book which made the end pretty disappointing. If I avoided reviews I may have appreciated what the author did a little more. I didn't particularly care for narrator in this case either.

Don't read reviews!

I really enjoy this novel. Surprising ending which you will have to read/listen to. I like that KL Slater springs these surprises. Lucy Price Lewis is a great narrator. Can't wait to listen to the next novel!!!

What a surprise!!!

To be honest, this K.L.Slater offering involves - until the climax - pretty mundane events. The central family is remarkably milquetoast.. if a little dysfunctional in their management of grief and relationships. Slater's characters are so banal that they are actually unlikable (even supposedly sympathetic characters like the "I-just-want-to-be-loved" widower 'Ben' and his irrepressibly sweet 4-year-old 'Joshua' are annoying).
Fortunately, Slater is masterful at using foreshadowing, deceitful & vicious inner dialogue, and "WTF" plot twists to repeatedly regenerate interest until we get to the final few chapters. Her signature final twists are implausible (and pretty "out of nowhere") in this story, but satisfying.

Less fortuitously, Lucy Price-Lewis is a little bit off her game (exhibiting uncharacteristically groanworthy voice-acting at times) - and Audible Studios Inc is somewhat lazy with editing (actually allowing a repeated recorded segment at one point).
Still, this is an above-average production.. just not up to typical audio standards for the Audible/Price-Lewis tandem.

Overall, this admittedly imperfect audiobook is one of the better Slater offerings that I have encountered. 'Liar' merits 8.5 stars out of 10. I was genuinely surprised by how engrossed I became with an outwardly boring cast of characters. If you can get it (as I did) included with your subscription - you should absolutely do so. Even for a Credit, the entertainment would be worth it.

Oddly Captivating
