Publisher's Summary

Kiera Van Gelder's first suicide attempt at the age of 12 marked the onset of her struggles with drug addiction, depression, post-traumatic stress, self-harm, and chaotic romantic relationships - all of which eventually led to doctors' belated diagnosis of borderline personality disorder 20 years later.

The Buddha and the Borderline is a window into this mysterious and debilitating condition, an unblinking portrayal of one woman's fight against the emotional devastation of borderline personality disorder. This haunting, intimate memoir chronicles both the devastating period that led to Kiera's eventual diagnosis and her inspirational recovery through therapy, Buddhist spirituality, and a few online dates gone wrong. Kiera's story sheds light on the private struggle to transform suffering into compassion for herself and others, and is essential listening for all seeking to understand what it truly means to recover and reclaim the desire to live.

for those living with BPD looking for answers

Most books on Borderline Personality Disorder are boring; they usually pump out the same marker traits in a different anecdotal way but leave you with a bleak outlook on your future. However, the way Kiera tells her story makes her more relatable than the character examples given in ‘I Hate You, Don’t Leave Me’ and her words are easy to digest in audio form. I found myself agreeing along with her analogies, pop culture references with her parts and her desires to be well emotionally. This is a great memoir to check out for those recently diagnosed, those looking to understand different therapy approaches to BPD and how to improve relationships with family, friends and loved ones.

Incredibly Helpful

BPD is surrounded by a terrible amount of misinformation that is very hurtful and stigmatizing for those who live with the disorder. I would highly recommend this to anyone with the disorder or to anyone looking to better understand what it’s like to actually have.

Magnificent in every way

With illuminating honesty and humanizing wit, Van Gelder writes about her struggles to find relief from and overcome the suffering caused by Borderline Personality Disorder’s intense and seemingly-uncontrollable emotional storms; storms that erupt like coronal mass ejections, damaging relationships and constantly derailing one’s progress through life.

Kiera delivers an ocean of insight that will benefit anyone grappling with BPD or any mental health challenges. Her journey provides a fantastic roadmap that will inspire listeners to take action to improve their own lives.

The Buddha and the Borderline is an absolute masterpiece.

Interesting and insightful

My sister asked me to read this book because she has BPD (although she has not been officially diagnosed and does not have it to the degree of the author). Nonetheless it was helpful to understand the disorder and how it affects ones life, and the lives of those around her. I also I found it insightful for my job as a social worker. An honest , eye-opening and endearing memoir. #Audible1

A Beautiful, Honest Portrayal

I enjoyed every minute of this audiobook; a part of me is already missing it. Being with someone who is inflicted with the disorder, I appreciate the knowledge, experience, and detailed description provided in this book. It's like a little window into the borderline mind. I want to learn as much as I can about BPD, out of curiosity, and in an effort to understand my partner, and give them a life truly worth living. Thank you Carla for the wonderful narration and Thank you Kiera for sharing an important chapter of your life with all of us. Thank you
