From the New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and The Cafe by the Sea comes another enchanting, unforgettable novel of a woman who makes a fresh start on the beautiful Scottish Island of Mure—only to discover life has more surprises in store for her.

When Flora MacKenzie traded her glum career in London for the remote Scottish island of Mure, she never dreamed that Joel—her difficult, adorable boss—would follow. Yet now, not only has Flora been reunited with her family and opened a charming café by the sea, but she and Joel are taking their first faltering steps into romance.

With Joel away on business in New York, Flora is preparing for the next stage in her life. And that would be…? Love? She’s feeling it. Security? In Joel’s arms, sure. Marriage? Not open to discussion.

In the meanwhile, Flora is finding pleasure in a magnificent sight: whales breaking waves off the beaches of Mure. But it also signals something less joyful. According to local superstition, it’s an omen—and a warning that Flora’s future could be as fleeting as the sea-spray…

A bracing season on the shore sets the stage for Jenny Colgan’s delightful novel that’s as funny, heartwarming, and unpredictable as love itself.

This was my first Jenny Colgan book and I loved it. It was charming, engaging, and heartwarming. I wish I would have started with the first book in the series, knowing now how much I enjoyed it. I couldn't always understand the Scottish phrases but could deduce the gist of it and it wasn't a problem (kind of charming, actually-and humorous). The only thing I found odd/funny was the American accent. Is this what we North Americans sound like to the Scottish? Yikes! Brutish, lol. Nevertheless, the best book I have listened to in a long time.

What a wonderful book

During these trying times, I wanted a more upbeat read. This was very sad. Even the ending left a lot unanswered.

Very depressing

I enjoyed the description of the sceneries of this imaginary island in north of Scotland and the messages of community and strength.
However, it is getting pretty tiring to read and this authors books about Her description of someone, beautiful as blonde hair and blue eyes, which has an almost Aryan flavour to it.
The narrator has a nice voice, but terrible way of sounding like a North American (somehow all North Americans sound like Valley girls or hillbillies) and don’t get me started on her narration of what a three year-old sounds like! It was actually torturous to listen to her speaking for a three-year-old; she must’ve never met a three-year-old because she makes them sound like a Neanderthal, who was just learning the ways of the English language.
This was my second book by this author, and I had hoped that it would be less about Love predictable love story of poor, hard-working girl, falling in love with boss who is rich and somehow it’s working out and more about Scotland, what sadly I was sorely disappointed.

Good description of sceneries but repetitive ending
