About this listen

In the early 1980s, long before he was President or head of the CIA, even before a submarine named Red October crossed the Atlantic, Jack Ryan was an historian, teacher, and recent ex-Marine temporarily living in England. A series of deadly encounters with an IRA splinter group had brought him to the attention of the CIA's Deputy Director, Vice Admiral James Greer - and when Greer asked him to come aboard Jack was quick to accept. The opportunity was irresistible.

Then Jack forgot about the rest of his work, because on his first day, an extraordinary document crossed his desk. The new Pope had just delivered a private ultimatum to Warsaw: If the government persisted in its repression, he would feel compelled to resign the papacy and return to Poland.

That was going to have consequences.

In Moscow, another man was contemplating those very same consequences. Yuri Andropov, the chairman of the KGB, did not like what this meant for him or for his nation. All it took was one man to cause everything he had worked for to crumble...and all it took was one man to stop him. The Pope was very powerful - but he was also mortal.

And so it begins, an almost unthinkable plot - a plan to bring down not just leaders, but nations. Ryan will find himself in the middle of a chain reaction, a high-stakes game meant to shake the world...and in which a novice CIA analyst might just be out of his depth.

Excellent narrator, captivating story

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Disclaimer: I am a biased reviewer as I am addicted to the Jack Ryan character from a young age.

Tom Clancy does an excellent job at describing in high detail the different story lines that make up the overall novel. Scott Brick nails the accents and character feel, to give the listener an almost pictorial visualization of the different characters.

I highly recommend this book as one of your first reads in getting to know Jack Ryan.

Another great book and performace

Not quite as gripping and the first novel, but still a great listen. I was a bit spoiled from listening to the narrator Peter Kenny of the Witcher series, who can do so many voices, you forget it is one narrator. It took a few chapters for me to settle into Scott Brick's voice again, but he does a great British accent and not bad with Russian as well. The book drags in a few spots, but I guess that is to be expected with books this long. I'll admit that I may have driven the long way home and to work just so I would get a bit longer listen in when I could. I'll hold off on the next book as I know I can't stop once I start with these books.

Interesting

This is a pretty standard spy novel about a defection. Ludlum and even Fleming do the job much better but this isn't bad. Clancy is way better when he gets into technical details and military stuff. The writing and reading are very 'tongue in cheek' and it gets a little grating, but performance is fairly good given the material. 7 stars out of 10.

Good book but

This was a good book and well done but never have I read a book were everything goes perfectly without a hitch, I kept waiting for a shoe to drop… something doesn’t go according to plan but it never does

Xenophobic, racist and sexist but with a good plot.

Apparently anywhere but the USA is inferior, women not well represented and casual semi-frequent use of “n***ardly”. The plot is ok, but there’s a good chunk to be skipped.

Not Clancy's best effort.

a lack-lustre novel by Clancy. I enjoy most of his books but this one reeaaaallly drags and didn't pique my interest at all. He seems to get side tracked and go off on annoying political and socio-economic tangents that really were tough to get through. and yes I know politics play a key role in most of his Jack Ryan novels but this time around it is drear and frustrating.

performance was fine as usual but I couldn't even finish it and I'm half way through. Normally Clancy's stories are buzzing with intrigue and action but this slow narrative failed to interest me. its a shame I wasted money on it.

Another winner.

Huge fan of Tom Clancy and this is another hit. The auration was first rate. The accents were there, enough to give a clear distinction between Russians, Brits, and Americans, but suntle enough to not seem overly theatrical. Very easy to listen to.

Great book!!

It was really fantastic to enjoy this audiobook in chronological order, after Patriot Games, also performed by Scott Brick.
