About this listen
The best-selling novel by Tana French, author of the forthcoming novel The Searcher, is “required reading for anyone who appreciates tough, unflinching intelligence and ingenious plotting” (The New York Times). She “inspires cultic devotion in readers” (The New Yorker) and is “the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years” (Washington Post).
“Atmospheric and unputdownable.” (People)
In best-selling Tana French’s newest “tour de force” (The New York Times), being on the Murder Squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point.
Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed-to-a-shine, and dead in her catalog-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner. There's nothing unusual about her - except that Antoinette's seen her somewhere before.
And that her death won't stay in its neat by-the-numbers box. Other detectives are trying to push Antoinette and Steve into arresting Aislinn's boyfriend, fast. There's a shadowy figure at the end of Antoinette's road. Aislinn's friend is hinting that she knew Aislinn was in danger. And everything they find out about Aislinn takes her further from the glossy, passive doll she seemed to be.
Antoinette knows the harassment has turned her paranoid, but she can't tell just how far gone she is. Is this case another step in the campaign to force her off the squad, or are there darker currents flowing beneath its polished surface?

What the critics say

“A tour de force.... When you read Ms. French - and she has become required reading for anyone who appreciates tough, unflinching intelligence and ingenious plotting - make only one assumption: All of your initial assumptions are wrong.” (Janet Maslin, The New York Times)
"Tana French is the most interesting, most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years." (The Washington Post)
"[Tana French] inspires cultic devotion in readers…most crime fiction is diverting; French's is consuming." (The New Yorker)

Excellent as always
Tana French is one of my favourite writers. While it’s very hard to like the lead character, the plot keeps you hooked. The climax is excellent. I really liked how all the characters evolved eventually. Enjoyed every bit of it.

Little too long but good all the way!
I liked it overall and I’d definitely recommend. It’s a bit too long in places but I like the thoroughness of the investigation.

Flawed characters, near flawless writing
Not just a murder mystery but a story about the stories we tell ourselves. Fay's narration is pitch perfect.

great narration, brutal first third of book
I’m a huge fan of Tana French, and appreciate both the characters she creates (in this case the detectives in the murder squad) as well as the story/plot.
But wow in this outing, the main character is *so* angry; so very very angry that it really dragged me down. It all got sorted in the end but I wonder if all the angst in the first third was necessary.
Still a satisfying listen but not
my favourite. 3.5 stars

Psychological Intrigue & Partnership
I really enjoyed the psychological exploration of Conway's character in relation to her partnership with Steve. This book was a roller coaster in many ways.

Great crime/detective Novel
I am a huge fan of Tana French. Each novel is a unique but twisted storyline. The hero’s are realistic and interesting. I hope Tana French keeps pumping out these novels. The narrators are all different but true to the story line. Enjoyed Hilda Fay’s narration and would enjoying listening to her again.

Fantastic. Don’t miss this!
This was the best novel I’ve listened to! The writing was superb and the narrator was terrific-the best I’ve ever heard. Congrats and thanks to Tana French and Hilda Fay for bringing this to us. I hope Ms. Fay narrates all of French’s in future!

Best Tana French yet
I’ve listened to 4 of the Dublin Murder Squad novels and this is by far my favourite. The main character Antoinette, is so engaging, in her own angry way, as is her partner. I’m now reading the first book that features these two. The Trespasser has a good pace and kept me on the edge of my seat. Loved the narrator.

Fell short
This was my first Tana French novel and it just fell flat with me. I will certainly give other titles a try.
