    The Guard at the Tomb

    Matthew 27:62-66

We remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again” verse 63

These religious leaders vented their hatred of Christ quickly when they called Him “that deceiver.” These words are translated from a word which means “vagabond imposter

The memory of the enemies of Christ was better than the memory of Christ’s disciples when it came to the resurrection message. The disciples did not pay attention to this message, for they did not want nor think Christ would die. All Christ’s predictions about His death and promises about the resurrection were unheeded by the disciples. But Christ’s enemies heard and remembered the message

    Jesus Is Buried

    Matthew 27:57-61

There came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph” verse 57 The man who provided the tomb for Christ was a wealthy man. It seems that most earthly wealth is controlled by the ungodly; but there are a few exceptions among the wealthy, such as Joseph of Arimathea, who are friends of the Gospel.

    The Death of Jesus

    Matthew 27:45-56

Death was announced by the cry of Christ on the cross. The actual cry, “It is finished,” is recorded only in John 19:30.

The crucifixion was not a victory for the devil and a defeat of God. It was not an unplanned event or unexpected event for God. It was planned (I Peter 1:18–20; Revelation 13:8) and carried out to the letter by God and Christ.

    Jesus Is Mocked

    Matthew 27:27-31

Before Christ was crucified, He was chastised severely. He had already been through a similar experience after the religious trial. Now His body takes on more suffering after Pilate’s trial.

Chastising was usually done as a preliminary to capital punishment, but here it was part of Pilate’s subtle scheme to release Christ. In Luke 23:16, Pilate is recorded as saying he would “chastise him [Christ] and release him.” Pilate was not chastising Christ in preparation for capital punishment but to satisfy the cruel appetite of the mob. He apparently thought the sight of the suffering would mitigate their cruel desires, but he miscalculated, for the sight of a bloodied Christ only sent the mob into a more clamorous call for His death, for “when the chief priests . . . and officers saw him [in the bloodied condition from the chastising], they cried out . . . Crucify him, crucify him” (John 19:6).

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

    Matthew 27:24-26

Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children” Verse 25 This was the response of the people to Pilate’s wanting protection from injustice. The response said more than the people realized. First, it declared innocence. “His blood be on us” says the sentence against Christ was unjust, and He was innocent. Second, it confessed iniquity. “His blood be on us” acknowledges the iniquity of the killing of Christ. The Jews were in fact guilty of murder. Third, it invited injury. “His blood be on us, and on our children.” They got their wish, beginning with the siege on Jerusalem a few years later to all the troubles the Jews have had since then. This horrible murder of Christ has caused the Jews terrible times; but when the Jews turn back to Christ, the troubles for Israel will be over.

    The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

    Matthew 27:15-23

For he knew that for envy they had delivered him” Verse18 Pilate did not perceive a lot of things, but he did readily perceive that it was envy which caused the religious leads of Israel to attack Jesus. Pilate was in politics and knew much about envy. He recognized that it was the envy of the accusers not the evil of the accused that prompted this trial. This recognition said Christ was innocent of the accusations. Pilate repeatedly spoke of the innocence of Christ but did not have the character to execute justice. He was more concerned about the reaction of people than God.

    Jesus Before Pilate

    Matthew 27:11-14

Pilate’s wife warned him about a troubling dream concerning Jesus verse 19 Despite his growing unease, Pilate gave in to the crowd’s demand for crucifixion.

He symbolically washed his hands, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood” (Matthew 27:24).

Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified, though he recognized his innocence.
