About this listen

In Codependent No More, Melody Beattie introduced the world to the term codependency. Now a modern classic, this book established Beattie as a pioneer in self-help literature and endeared her to millions of people who longed for healthier relationships. Twenty-five years later, concepts such as "self-care" and "setting boundaries" have become entrenched in mainstream culture.

Now Beattie has written a follow-up volume, The New Codependency, which clears up misconceptions about codependency, identifies how codependent behavior has changed, and provides a new generation with a road map to wellness.

The question remains: What is and what isn't codependency? Beattie here reminds us that much of codependency is normal behavior. It's about crossing lines. There are times we do too much, care too much, feel too little, or overly engage. Feeling resentment after giving is not the same as heartfelt generosity. Narcissism and self-love, enabling and nurturing, and controlling and setting boundaries are not interchangeable terms.

In The New Codependency, Beattie explores these differences, effectively invoking her own inspiring story and those of others, to empower us to step out of the victim role forever. Codependency, she shows, is not an illness but rather a series of behaviors that once broken down and analyzed can be successfully combated.

Each section offers an overview of and a series of activities pertaining to a particular behavior - caretaking, controlling, manipulation, denial, repression, etc. - enabling us to personalize our own step-by-step guide to wellness. These sections, in conjunction with a series of tests allowing us to assess the level of our codependent behavior, demonstrate that while it may not seem possible now, we have the power to take care of ourselves, no matter what we are experiencing.

Punctuated with Beattie's renowned candor and intuitive wisdom, The New Codependency is an owner's manual to learnin...

A lot of questionnaires

Great book, excellent info and update to her original, but listening to hours of questionnaires on audible is not ideal. Would be better to have this in physical form.

too much religion in it

it should be in description that book is based on religion. "everything happens for a reason, trust in God, he has a plan for you"
deceiving book for someone who is looking for more then putting other cheek for someone to hit, and we supposed to forgive then.

Lists and more lists

Not sure if it was the narration or the book but this feels like listening to someone read list after list, or read from a dictionary. Extremely hard to absorb or not zone out when listening

A good book if you are unsure you are codependent.

This is a great book if you are unsure if you are codependent. However I was hoping for more out of this book. I already know I have been affected by codependency in my relationships and so the scoring tests didn't really help. I found there was far too much focus on addiction, recovery programs, Melody's personal story and not enough on relationship dynamics. I felt Melody is much too suggestive in giving everything over to god, which in my mind is way too easy of a "solution" and can cause one to avoid personal growth by facing the hard questions in their behaviours. Growing up in a faith I found this book very preachy, I kept thinking how put off an atheist would feel reading this book. If one does not believe there is a god or feels god does not have a set destiny for that individual it leaves the reader wanting. It seems almost like trading one codependency for a faith based one. Mindfulness is amazing and a very helpful practice but I really wish this book offered more prompts and examples to encourage the reader to self reflect and dig deeper into their personal lives to see and know how these codependencies manifested in the first place.
